Penja black pepper is obtained from the white pepper that one dries several days under a burning sun. It is in the same way as the white pepper an exceptional pepper of the Cameroonian soil that is found exclusively in Cameroon in the region of Penja. It is the first product from sub-Saharan Africa to have received a designation of origin in 2013: Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and quality awarded by the European Union.

To obtain this GI (title of intellectual property), awarded the same year to the white honey of Oku, produced in the North-western region of Cameroon, Penja producers who have been growing this condiment for decades have benefited from funding from the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) and the French Development Agency (AFD)
