Il existe plusieurs variétés d’hibiscus, mais attention, c’est l’hibiscus sabdariffa qui est comestible. Dans certains pays, cette appellation latine est remplacée par d’autres – telles que l’oseille de Guinée ou flor de Jamaica au Mexique –, mais il s’agit bel et bien de la même plante. Cetarbuste de la famille des malvacées est originaire d’Afrique de l’Ouest, où il pousse à profusion. Si nous prenons l’exemple du Sénégal, l’hibiscus sabdariffa est cultivé sur l’ensemble du territoire et récolté à la main. Il est très apprécié et son infusion appelée Bissap y est incontournable.
