Natural vegetable glove (Luffa)

The luffa is a squash that grows in tropical and subtropical regions.

Fom Asia and Africa, this plant was introduced in Europe in the 16th century, but it remains mainly cultivated in tropical countries as well as in the Mediterranean Basin.

Luffa acutangula is cultivated in coastal areas of semi-dry savanna such as Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Benin, Nigeria, Madagascar as well as in Reunion island and Mauritius...

It is also cultivated in East Africa for Asian populations near major cities and especially in southern and eastern Asia.

The elongated green fruits, consumable in the young state, then take on a fibrous consistency which is used to make sponges and/or natural gloves.

Tips for use:

  1. Once transformed into a natural sponge or glove, the loofah can be used for personal hygiene as well as for the maintenance of the house.
  2. Zero waste, 100% natural, biodegradable and compostable, luffa is the ideal alternative to synthetic sponges.
  3. In addition, it can be used with all ecological cleaning products, from white vinegar to black soap to baking soda.
  4. It must always be well moistened so as not to be too rough.
  5. The luffa is very effective on taps, ceramic plates, and cleans dishes very well.
  6. It must always be rinsed and dried to maximize its service life, and can even be machine operated from time to time at 40°C.
  7. After a few months, it must be replaced, and can be placed in compost to be returned to the land after good and loyal services.
  8. The main property of the loofah is its exfoliating power: its fibres eliminate dead skin and impurities, which explains why it is also known as the «squash of the hammam».
