The African massep or basil (Ocimum gratissimum) is a tropical basil of the Lamiaceae family that is native to Central Africa.

The antioxidant found in basil is rosmaniric acid, which belongs to the group of polyphenols. Flavonoids and phenolic acids with antioxidant properties are also present in basil. Beta-caryophyllene (BCP), a natural anti-inflammatory compound, is also found in basil.

Description

Rich in camphor, the massep is effective against colds, flu because it clears the airway. It can also be used as a cough treatment, to calm sore throats. In gargle it will relieve oral infections. In herbal tea it allows to sleep well so to have a restful sleep. We also confer digestive properties to the massep. Used in infusion or decoction, it facilitates digestion, reduces flatulence, bloating and is an excellent natural vermifuge. You can also chew a leaf to calm temporary indigestion. It treats diarrhea, vomiting and nausea.
